Love and Penguins on the Cape of Good Hope

May 30, 2013 by Eva Louise 4 Comments

***This isn’t a food post, but the first of three posts from my recent trip to South Africa. I promise the other two will include food.***

Recently, Stingray and I met up in South Africa for a romantic trip before he tries his luck in the world of African entrepreneurship.  I learned that there’s a lot of pressure on these types of trips to have the perfect time, be on your best behavior (as in, not throw a tantrum if you have to choose between seeing the African penguins or going to lunch ) and see absolutely everything so you can report back to your friends  just how freaking fabulous your romantic getaway was.  This trip represented even more pressure given when it ended, I got on a plane back to our apartment in Manhattan and he, on a plane to a new life  in the bustling city of Addis Ababa.DSCN1240

So given all this, our trip definitely wasn’t something out of a Sandal’s Resort commercial (strep throat and food poisoning made sure of this) but after a week of zigzagging through South Africa, we made it to the Cape of Good Hope on a day when the sun couldn’t decide whether to stay or go, with a seascape of air and wind and waves so eerie, I almost expected a 15th century, India-bound ship to sail right by us. We took some photos and kissed at the top of a rock formation and with that, we headed back to Cape Town and the next day, we went our separate ways.

There’s something to be said about driving with the person you love, watching them in an entirely different light, under an unfamiliar constellation of  stars, shuffling through maps you can’t read, thinking, “There’s no one I’d rather be  with than you.”DSCN1228

Love you, Stingray. Thank you for a memorable adventure.

Moped Dinner Party in Switzerland

May 17, 2013 by Eva Louise Leave a Comment

le menuSometimes when I’m alone, eating bread rolls with packets of mayo drinking mini-bar wine  in my hotel bed watching Russian music videos, I think to myself  “business trips kind of suck.” But then I remind myself that most nights my life is fabulous and that I rule. Evidence of this is the incredible dinner party I had with some girlfriends and their beaus recently while on a business trip to Geneva.

Normally working late into the night, I committed to leaving the office  in time to hop on my friend, Cristina’s Moped and head to France to do some dinner party grocery shopping.  Holding tightly to her waist (apparently NOT necessary  which she made very clear to me), with the spring breeze blowing through my 2-piece suit, and our helmets bonking against one another with every windy turn, I knew this was exactly the 2-wheeled escape I needed.

Dinner Party

Eva’s Spring salad: rocket, shaved zucchini, cucumbers, chives, mozzarella with a lemon vinaigrette

My European friends are by default better cooks than I (because they are Europeans) , so I gladly took a step back on this meal and just offered to make a simple salad (above) while the girls  made seared duck breast with an apricot jam, mustard and soy sauce glaze, sauteed asparagus and roasted potatoes. Thank you, ladies for a truly decadent dinner escape!

Oyster Romance

March 29, 2013 by Eva Louise 2 Comments

oysrterThis past week, Stingray and I needed a little romance in our life. Nothing says “hey there, Big Boy” like oysters and luckily we just happened to have a dozen briney Wellfleet oysters in the fridge.  I picked up a cheap proscecco and a couple of extra groceries to make it a meal: a soft cheese and crusty bread to serve with a crisp macintosh apple.  I felt like I needed to cook something, so I picked up a bunch of asparagus and steamed them, poached two eggs and made a (kind of) homemade béarnaise.

The stars must have seriously been aligned for operation romance, because right before I was about to serve dinner I remembered some shrimp I had in the freezer to help me really make this a bangin’ dinner.  I boiled and peeled them and set up all the proper shellfish fixins’: lemon, cocktail sauce, horseradish and a homemade mignonette sauce (vinegar and shallots) and we were ready for a partay. Can’t wait until we get another dozen oysters…

Swiss Miss Fondue: Part Deux

February 6, 2013 by Eva Louise 1 Comment

photo (1)So…fondue…turns out it’s a little harder to make than I thought.  Mine was lumpy and separated, looking more like an aerial shot of the sinking city of Venice than a creamy delicious pot of cheese. Aren’t you just supposed to dump cheese and wine into a pot and  melt it?!

Regardless, I went over to Sissy’s house early in the morning on Thursday  to drop off her new fondue pot and the delectable bounty from Zurich. Since we’re two sister’s with no self-control, we broke open the macarons and ate the whole box…with some cheese eggs… and toast.

Afterwards, on a really expensive sugar-high, I went to her local grocery store to pick up  salad materials, bread and some dipping vegetables for the fondue. Later that night when I came back over, everything was all set and ready to assemble. Despite my fondue not fondue-ing properly, it was simply delicious. With foie gras, a crisp salad, good wine (Switzerland has failed me on this front, I’m sorry) and fantastic company, we dipped and dined to our hearts’ desire, making for (what I think was) the perfect belated birthday celebration.

Swiss Miss Fondue: Part One

January 30, 2013 by Eva Louise 5 Comments

photoTonight I’m finally back in action in New York City after a long business trip in Geneva, Davos, and Zurich, Switzerland. Unfortunately I missed my sister’s birthday while in the Swiss Alps so to make it up to her, I’m hosting her at her new apartment for a night of proper Swiss fondue, complete with crusty bread, dijon new potatoes and fresh salad (sketch above). Beyond the basics, I have some other delicious surprises waiting for her including fois gras, a luxurious bottle of kirsch, a good bottle of Fendant, chocolate truffles and a dozen decadent macarons made in Zurich less than two days ago.

While I’ve dined on cheese fondue many a time, I’ve never actually made it, so I look forward to reporting back once the birthday party is over. Happy Birthday, Kippy!

Team Supremo and Tagliatelle Tartufo

December 8, 2012 by Eva Louise Leave a Comment

milanosupremoTeam Supremo* has gone international with a weekend trip to Italy to celebrate Marina’s birthday! We were ambitious and woke up early today for a 3-hour bus tour of the gorgeous city of Milano with a final stop to view Da Vinci’s Last Supper. Famished and freezing our little brioches off, this was a great segway into lunch. We stopped in a precious little, well…Italian restaurant. After a champagne toast, we shared a caprese salad, tagliatelle con tartufo nero, and a nice bottle of chianti (OK, fine…we also had an insanely rich ricotta and artichoke crepe). One cannolo and two macchiatos later it was time for shopping and a nap. Can we fast forward to dinner? I can’t wait.

*the unfortunate nickname Marina and I gave ourselves 5 years ago in college.

A Day in the Life of the Orchard Queen!

October 27, 2012 by Eva Louise 2 Comments

A Saturday under the apple trees…

This weekend I went north to Massachusetts for a proper fall getaway. The family and I woke up early late and headed to Honey Pot Hill Orchard.  Only one of the most delicious places to be this time of year, Honey Pot is a hybrid orchard-farm where you can feed pigs, goats, sheep and bunnies, go on a hayride, pick apples, sip cider, eat apple cider donuts, AND brave the largest hedge maze in North America.  We had the pleasure of getting a personal, VIP  tour by Honey Pot’s best employee…my Mom!

We started the day off by meeting all of Mom’s co-workers!

Then we stopped by the break room.  Everyone there is always eating donuts…

We didn’t want to distract everyone from their work, so we pitched in!…

Apple Picking!

We worked up quite an appetite, so unfortunately this happened:

We needed desperately to walk off our chili dogs, so we headed up the hill to “North America’s Largest Hedge Maze”:

…it took 7 years to grow!

Thanks for a great day at the office, Mom! xo

Family Goes West: Pike Place Market

October 7, 2012 by Eva Louise 1 Comment

This weekend I’m back on the West Coast with the family (the only place I  seem to be able to blog these days!…) for a quick trip to Seattle.  We’re here to reunite with our long-lost-but-now-found family. Amidst nametags, handshakes, hugs and kisses from our new cousins, the five of us luckily found time for a routine stop at Pike Place Market. Truly one of my favorite places on this planet, I get to sniff and paw at sachets of lavender, cranberry beans, alien-like romesco cauliflower, beeswax candles, salty oysters and rub my face on teddy bears made from alpaca hair (that happened).                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 Aside from exploring at each of the market’s stalls, it’s family custom to cross the street to the Hom Bow stand for the sweet steamed pork buns…Cheers!

Oh, and no family trip would be complete without a sibling sunset photoshoot…love you, guys xox

Tofino Time: Clamming leads to Clam and Smoked Salmon Chowder

August 21, 2012 by Eva Louise 3 Comments

OK, how many things can the Fowlers yank from the water, throw in a pot and then eat? Let me tell you… a lot. To top off our foraging extravaganza this trip, we woke for an early morning low tide and dug for clams on the tidal flats.

no images were found

Mom was kind enough to make an amazing  clam and smoked salmon chowder when we returned with our bounty.  I have no clue what really goes into Mom’s chowder, but the truth is, I don’t want to know, I just want to eat it.

Mom’s Clam and Smoked Salmon Chowder

My brother shot this short but equally illustrative video of all of us digging away on the flats– A 1:33 minute taste of what it’s like in the life of a Foraging Fowler:

Tofino Time: What’d you do with all those chanterelles?

August 17, 2012 by Eva Louise 1 Comment

After picking a heap of chanterelles the other morning, I was sort of at a loss on what to do with them (although thank you to my friends for the inspiration!). But then, two amazing things happened 1) we went for a beach hike and found mussels, (Lie. Dad yanked them off the rocks while Emily and I napped on a log); 2) we went to an amazing ocean front farm and bought fresh goat cheese. With those deliciously serendipitous run-ins, I decided on Mussels with Fennel, Tomatoes and Chanterelles in White Wine and a simple Goat Cheese and Chanterelle Tart (recipe from old post, here).
